Why Do We Call Them Reusable Paper Towels?

One question has come up a lot lately:

"Why do you call them reusable paper towels instead of dishcloths, rags, or cloths?"

It's a fair question.

The answer is simple...we don't call them reusable paper towels because we think we invented a new kind of cloth. We call them that because of the problem they solve.

Our Story

When our kids were young, we went through an unbelievable amount of paper towels. Between spills, sticky hands, muddy footprints, kitchen messes, and everything in between, we were constantly reaching for paper towels.

I had heard about reusable paper towels and loved the idea that they stayed right on the counter. Instead of opening a drawer to find a cloth or automatically grabbing a roll of disposable paper towels, the reusable ones were right where we'd always reached before. They fit on a paper towel holder, making the switch from disposable to reusable feel surprisingly easy.

That's why we've continued making reusable paper towels ever since.

Are They Just Dishcloths?

In one sense, yes, they're cloth! But the difference isn't just the material, it's how they're used. We still use tea towels for drying dishes and dishcloths for washing dishes. Reusable paper towels simply have a different job. They're meant for the quick messes that we'd normally reach for a paper towel to clean up.

They're great for:

  • Wiping up spills
  • Cleaning sticky hands and faces
  • Wiping counters
  • Cleaning windows and mirrors
  • Using as a napkin
  • Quick floor cleanups
  • Everyday kitchen messes

Because they're stored right on the counter, they're always within reach when you need them.

Why Does Having Them on the Counter Matter?

One of the biggest reasons reusable habits stick is convenience.

If something is tucked away in a drawer, it's easy to forget about it. But when your reusable paper towels live on a paper towel holder, they're in the exact spot where you used to reach for disposable paper towels.

For our family, that small change made all the difference.

Do You Need Reusable Paper Towels?

Not necessarily. If your current system works well for you, that's wonderful. Everyone has different routines, and there isn't one "right" way to create a more sustainable home.

But if you're looking for an easy way to cut back on disposable paper towels without completely changing your routine, reusable paper towels have been one of the simplest swaps we've made.
