We just finished shovelling out from a wild winter storm, and there’s another snowfall warning today! With cozy baking season in full swing, I recently got gifted a sourdough starter, so we’re leaning into all things bread right now. If you’re baking at home too, you already know the struggle: homemade bread dries out fast. And when that happens, you’re either forcing yourself to eat stale slices because you don’t want to waste all the work you put into it…or tossing half the loaf. Here are some simple, practical ways to make your bread last longer.
Let Your Bread Cool Completely
It can be tempting to put your fresh loaf into a bag or container immediately, but trapped steam = soggy crust. Let your bread cool completely before storing, it makes a huge difference in texture and longevity.
Store Cut Side Down
When using a bread bag, store your loaf cut side down. This keeps the exposed side from drying out too quickly and helps your bread stay soft and fresh longer.
Remove Excess Air and Roll the Top Tightly
Whether you’re using a bag, a container, or a bread box, removing as much excess air as possible is key. If your bag has a roll-down top (like ours), roll it tightly after each use. This simple step slows down the bread from getting stale.
Freeze If You Won’t Finish It Quickly
If you don’t plan to eat a loaf within a few days, slice it and freeze it. You can pull out just the amount you need, and it will taste just as fresh once thawed.
Why I Use Reusable Bread Bags
Our reusable bread bags are designed specifically for homemade loaves and other baked goods. They have a cotton outer layer for breathability, a food-safe PUL liner to keep moisture at the right level, a roll-down top to push excess air out, and a generous size for hearty sandwich or sourdough loaves.
The Takeaway
Homemade bread doesn’t have to go stale in two days. A few simple steps...cooling, storing cut side down, removing excess air, and freezing if needed and your bread can last much longer. When it lasts longer, you waste less and save money!
